Doing Multiple Downloads

Ever wonder if you can do more than one download at a time? Well, you can! In fact, Firefox will allow multiple downloads "out of the box".

Internet Explorer, on the other hand, will only allow two simultaneous downloads. What kind of geek downloads just two files at a time? Geeze! Sure it's better than just one, but definitely a bummer if you're on a high speed connection. Well, here's a little registry hack that will boost you to a whopping 10 downloads at a time. Makes you shudder at all the power you're about to wield with that little mouse, doesn't it?

As always, registry settings are not for those with weak digital constitutions.

If you're not 100% comfortable with accessing your registry, I suggest you just stick to 2 downloads at a time or give FireFox a try. As always, you do the following at your own risk.

Also, this was only tested with IE 6, not sure what it will do with older versions.

OK, that's enough covering my behind - here's the hack:

1. Hit the Start button, Run. Type in: regedit

And hit Enter (easy so far, huh?).

2. Now, navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Internet Settings

3. Now, you'll need to right-click on a blank area in the right-hand pane and select New (only option), then DWORD value

When you do, you'll see a new key that needs a name.

You'll want to name that key:

MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server

Probably best just to copy and paste that line :-)

Now, double-click the key and put this in for the value:

0000000a

4. OK, almost there. You need one more DWORD value. Once again, Right-click inside of the right-hand pane and select New, DWORD value. Name this one:

MaxConnectionsPerServer

Again, copy and pasting the above would probably be best.

Double-click that new key and give it this value:

0000000a

Your two new values should look like this (note that the 0x and (10) are added by windows - don't add them to the values I just gave you):

5. Exit out of the registry editor and restart your computer. You should now be able to download up to 10 files at a time using IE. That's like 5X the fun you were having before!

Follow the instructions if you want to change Volume Licensing product key on a computer that is running Windows XP SP1 and later versions of Windows XP and then try to install Windows XP SP2.

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.

3. In the left pane, locate and then click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents

4. In the right pane, right-click OOBETimer, and then click Modify.
5. Change at least one digit of this value to deactivate Windows.

6. Click Start, and then click Run.

7. In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK.

8. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows, and then click Next.

9. Click Change Product key.

10. Type the new product key in the New key boxes, and then click Update.

11. Repeat steps 6 and 7 to verify that Windows is activated. You receive the following message:

Windows is already activated. Click OK to exit.

12. Click OK.

13. Install Windows XP SP1 or a later version of Windows XP.

If you cannot restart Windows after you install Windows XP SP1 or a later version of Windows XP, press F8 when you restart the computer, select Last Known Good Configuration, and then repeat this procedure.

WHAT IS A VIRUS?

1. Virus is a little program that its activity can destruct/destroy some files
and a computer system. If this program does not open, it' still stays
inactive and could not or will not destroy anything.

2. Virus program is brought by an email-virus as attachment, where it
has a server itself (virus server). Virus attachments cannot go to another
email to be an attachment, such as an email was sent by user
(netter), member, moderator etc. It must be brought by its email itself,
called EMAIL VIRUS.

3. EMAIL VIRUS would send by any email address of any account that it
finds from some mailbox and address-book's another person at anywhere.
So that a virus attachment could to become look like sent by our
friend, our member, our moderator etc.. In this case even my be able the
virus attachment was sent by your email address yourself.

4. Identification of virus attachment: it has a small size file,
<100KB, and it has file name extension such as:

*.scr
*.clp
*.pif
*.bat
*.exe
*.com
*.txt
*.doc
*.lhz
*.rhz
and some time it's compressed by *.zip file.
Also probably its name is HotMovie.MPEG__________scr.
Actualy the file is virus attachment file with extension .scr

If you received emails with extensions or subject matter as above, you should delete it. Please dont open it under any circumstances.
By the way don't give your email subject with a name look like EMAIL
VIRUS subject otherwise your email would be deleted by the recipient.

Windows XP Chkdsk - > How To Use The Command Line & Graphical Version

When Windows XP encounters a problem and has to shut down, perhaps there is a power cut, a motherboard problem etc..

The operating system will "flag" the volume as "dirty" and attempt to check it on reboot.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NB - You can manually check the state of the dirty flag for your C: drive. To do this at the Command Prompt type : fsutil dirty query c:

The response should be Volume - c: is NOT Dirty

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

However, you the computer user can manually run the chkdsk command to check for problems.

To do this:

Step One: Click Start, select Run

Step Two: In the box, type cmd

Step Three: Click Ok

Step Four: Run the chkdsk utility by typing in the following command:

chkdsk c:

..or

chkdsk c: /f /r

NOTE: The /f command automatically fixes any errors encountered, the /r command locates bad sectors and recovers readable information.

NOTE: I am also assuming the drive you wish to check is the C: drive.

Step Five: A reboot is normally required for the chkdsk program to lock the disk and run correctly (this is typical on machines that have only one volume), so simply restart the computer and chkdsk will run automatically. When it's finished, (This process can take quite a while depending on the size of your disk, etc.), it will boot back to normal Windows.

On Rebooting the PC you will see the disk being checked as in the screenshot below:

This process can take up to an hour!

Windows XP Chkdsk - How To Using The Graphical Version...

In addition to the command line utility detailed above. It is possible to access a graphical version of the Windows XP chkdsk.

To do this:

Step One: Open "My Computer", RIGHT click on the C drive icon, choose "Properties".

Step Two: When that loads, click on the "Tools" tab, then click on the "Check Now" button in the "Error Checking" section.

Step Three: When that little window loads, place a CHECK in BOTH boxes, then click on "Start Now".

Step Four: A message will pop up saying that Error Checking will run after you restart the computer, so......Restart the computer. Error Checking will run automatically after the restart and it locks you out from doing anything until it's finished. It takes a little time to perform the task but after it's finished, it will restart into Windows automatically.

The screenshot below shows the error checking window that should appear.

This article is only a basic introduction to using the Windows XP Chkdsk utility. In real life it is actually far more in depth than this. For instance when Windows XP reboots after initiating Chkdsk it is actually Autochk.exe that runs on reboot!

Because Autochk.exe can be controlled by setting or resetting registry settings, it is possible to programmatically schedule volumes for repair using Regini scripts.

These topics are beyond the scope of the average user so I do not discuss them here.

How to update a Device Driver (XP)

Keep your various hardware devices running smoothly and to the best of their potential by updating your drivers. New drivers constantly pop up, so it's best to keep them updated to improve performance.

Here's how to do it using Device Manager:

1. Go to Start and right-click on My Computer. Select Properties from the list.
2. Hit the Hardware tab.
3. Click the Device Manager button.
4. Select the device you want to update by hitting the plus sign next to the hardware category. The specific device shows up.
5. Right-click on the device and select Update Driver.
6. The Hardware Update Wizard pops up. Click the Install from a List or Specific location circle. Click Next.
7. Click the Don't Search circle & click Next.
8. Uncheck the Show Compatible Hardware circle. A list of manufactuers and models will pop up. Select the right model and click Next.
9. Windows will start installing the driver. Click Finish.

If you're not happy with the new driver or it's failing, you can roll back to the previous driver.

Here's how:

1. Open the Device Manger (steps 1 - 3 above) and expose the desired device.
2. Right-click on the device and select Properties.
3. Hit the Driver tab.
4. Hit the Roll Back button.

You can also go to the manufacturer's web site to download and install the latest drivers for your hardware.

Turn Off the Recycle Bin's Delete Confirmation

When emptying the Recycle Bin you are given a prompt that asks if you are sure you want to delete the files. For most people this step can seem redundant. If you needed the file, why would it be in the recycle bin? For those people who find this feature more of a hindrance than a help, here's how to remove it.

1. Right-click the Recycle Bin.
2. Click Properties.
3. From the Global tab uncheck the Display delete confirmation dialog box.
4. Click Apply>OK.

Solving Shutdown Errors

Most Windows users are used to their computer occasionally "hanging" when they're attempting to shut them down. When this happens, you are forced to manually turn the computer off which can damage your system.

While there are a number of reasons why this can happen, in some cases it's due to the "Fast Shutdown" feature in Windows 98. This enhancement helps you turn off your computer quicker but if you have this "hanging" problem, you might want to consider disabling it.

What we are going to do is increase the number of streams that your browser can draw from. Since Internet Explorer complies with HyperText Protocol v1.1, browsers usually only draw two streams or less from a Web server. We are going to increase that from two streams to six. This should enable you to browse much faster. To begin:

1. Click Start | Run.
2. Type regedit and click OK.
3. Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER, then Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion.
4. Click on Internet Settings to view its contents.
5. Check Regedit's right-hand column for the following two lines (values):
MaxConnectionsPerServer
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server
6. If these values are present, right-click on the first value (MaxConnectionsPerServer), select Modify from the drop-down menu, click Decimal, and set the Value data field to 6. Repeat this process for the second value (MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server).
7. If these lines (values) are not listed, right-click on the white region of Regedit's right-hand column, click New, and then click DWORD Value.
8. Enter MaxConnectionsPerServer for the name of the new DWORD Value and press Enter. The new value should now appear in Regedit's right-hand column.
9. Right-click the new value and click Modify.
10. As in step six, click Decimal and set the Value Data field to 6, then click OK.
11. Repeat steps seven through 10 using MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server as the new DWORD Value name instead of MaxConnectionsPerServer.
12. You are done. Close Regedit and test Internet Explorer.

In case you haven't noticed, Blogs are the talk of the web and they're taking the internet by storm.

I've been studying and working with blogs for several months and setting up a blog related to your website theme can definitely boost your search engine ranking and get you indexed quickly. Although my sites have already been indexed in Yahoo! and MSN for some time, I've seen a rise in search popularity and clicks to my sites since the creation of my blogs.

One of the great benefits of blogs is that search engines love them. Search engine spiders like fresh content so creating a blog and spending just a few minutes a day creating new posts will help you get indexed much quicker.

It's viral marketing at its best, not to mention - it's easy!

Once you set up your blog you also have the added benefit of plugging your blog into an RSS 'site feed'. RSS stands for 'Really Simple Syndication' and is a powerful technology that can literally help you build an audience overnight.

Let's take a look at how you can get your blog listed in Yahoo! and MSN quickly.

If you haven't done so already, create yourself a blog. I use www.blogger.com, which is a free service. Setting up a blog is like creating a one page mini site. It is extremely easy to set up, maintain and update. To get started, create your blog with a simple introduction, provide lots of useful information and include all your favorite links such as links to your website's homepage. Be sure to include a profile about yourself. This will help build trust with your readers and lets them get to know you as a real person.

Once you set up your blog it's important to keep it updated by adding information as often as you can. Think of it as a place to store tidbits of information that you come across on a daily basis. Make it useful and keep it relevant. Also, be sure to allow comments to your blog entries. This is a great way to get feedback from readers and foster 'food for thought' Depending on where your blog is hosted you should be able to find a 'site feed URL'. On www.blogger.com you will see it under the 'settings' tab. It will look something like this:

Once you locate the 'Site Feed URL' simply copy and paste it to notepad or a word doc because we are going to need it later.

Next, if you haven't already done so, create a "my Yahoo! account" and a "My MSN account".

http://www.msn.com

Once you have these accounts set up let's start with setting up your blog in Yahoo!

Go to My Yahoo! and log in. Once logged in, locate the search box located at the left. Directly under the search box is an 'add content' link, click on it.

On the next page locate the 'Find Content' box and over to the right locate the 'Add RSS by URL' link and click on it.

The next page has 'Add RSS by URL' at the top, simply copy and paste your 'Site Feed URL' that you saved earlier into the URL box and click 'Add'.

The next thing you will see is your site feed with your headlines. If you click on any one of them it should take you to your blog.

Your My Yahoo! page should now have your blog's site feed headlines listed at the bottom. It can sometimes take 24 to 48 hours to get listed, so if you don't see it right away you can check back later.

Now every time you update your blog, your new content will automatically be updated on Yahoo! And anyone else who subscribes to your feed will receive the updates. The best part of all is that within 24 to 48 hours you will be indexed on Yahoo!

Let's move on and do the same on MSN. Assuming you have already created your My MSN account, go to MSN and login to your account.

Once logged in locate the 'Add Content' link up at the top of the page and click on it. A pop-up window will display, simply copy in your 'Site Feed URL' that we saved earlier and click on the green arrow.

You should then see a check box with your blog's name next to it. Check off your 'Site Feed URL' and then press the OK button. Again you may have to wait 24 to 48 hours.

Congratulations! That's it ...you're done!

The important thing to remember is to keep your blogs updated with fresh, new information. A good rule of thumb is to add information as you come across things or as you have new tidbits or ideas to offer your viewers. I would recommend updating your blog at the very least, once a week.

In our terms a theme can be many things, such as a color scheme or subject matter, but in Google's terms, a theme is the subject matter - the topic. The topic is what the web pages are about. A jewelry website's pages are about jewelry of various kinds, therefore the site's theme is jewelry. Each page might be about a different kind of jewelry. The theme of a page about bracelets is bracelets and the theme of a page about necklaces is necklaces, but the overall theme of the site is jewelry.

Like many top search engines, Google likes themes to the extent that they influence a page's rankings. People often wonder why their PR6 page can't beat a PR4 or PR5 page in the rankings for a particular search term. There are a number of reasons for it and one of them is the theme of the sites or pages.

webworkshop.net is a good example. At the time of writing this particular page, the site contains only 5 pages, and Google has indexed all 5. There are a few medium PR inbound links to the site and a link to one of the pages from DMOZ. The result is that 4 pages have PR4 and the DMOZ linked page has PR5. It's a tiny site and yet it beats pages with higher PagRanks on larger sites. Why? Because the whole site is about PageRank. It has just one topic or theme. Even the front page, which isn't specifically about PageRank, includes the word "PageRank" several times. It isn't ranked at the very top for the search term "pagerank" (#12 as this is being written) but the ranking could be improved even with such a tiny site as this one. Some competing sites include other topics which dilute their PageRank content or theme. That's one reason why lower PageRanks sometimes beat higher PageRanks. There are a number of important reason and themes is one of them.

If I were to add a few pages about something completely different, say hotels, then the overall 'PageRank' theme of the site would be diluted. It wouldn't be one thing or the other, and it's "pagerank" rankings would suffer. Yes, it's PageRank pages would still be heavily themed but the overall site theme would be diluted. In the jewelry site example, each page is about a different kind of jewelry; necklaces, bracelets, rings, etc. and the overall site theme is jewelery. But it isn't necklaces! If another site came along that covered only necklaces, it's theme would be necklaces and for "necklace" type search terms it would have a good chance of beating the jewelry site in the rankings. It would depend on a number of factors, of course, but the theme is one important factor.

Most sites don't cover one precise topic such as PageRank or necklaces. They tend to cover general topics such as search engine information or jewelry. But there is something we can do to improve the theming in these sites and make the most of their pages' themes.

Suppose that the jewelry site deals with bracelets, rings and necklaces, and each of its content pages talks about all 3 product groups. What is each page's theme? What is the site's them? The product groups have been spread through the site and pages in a sort of generic fashion, so each page would be rather weakly themed towards necklaces, rings and bracelets. None of the 3 product groups would be strong in any of the pages. The site's theme would be pretty much the same.

Now suppose that the site has a number of pages that only deals with necklaces, another group that only deals with rings, and a group of pages for bracelets. Each page is now strongly themed towards necklaces, rings or bracelets. No dilution occurs in any of the pages, so each of these pages would fair better in the rankings for its particular theme.

Linking and link text

We can go further. By arranging links between the pages in each product group so that necklace pages link to necklace pages, ring pages link to ring pages, etc., and by using the link text properly, we can strengthen the theme of each page.

Google attributes the link text to the page that it is linking to. So the link text, "handmade bracelets", is attributed to the page that it links to. If the page is about handmade bracelets, the link text strengthens its 'handmade bracelets' theme. To see how significant the link text is, a group of people linked many pages to particular target page and all used the same link text phrase. The target page was nothing to do with the link text phrase. It didn't contain it and it wasn't about it. Nevertheless, the page made #1 in Google for the link text phrase. The method became known as "Google bombing".

Summary

So to theme a site that deals with various products, split the site's pages into various product groups and make links, with the right link text, between the pages in each group. The pages from each group can all be in one directory but I would make a sub-directory for each group and name the directory according to its product. Link from the site's index page or from a sitemap page to one of the pages in each group. From that page, all the other pages in the group can be found via links between them. If a product group is large enough to contain several sub-products, then split it into sub-products and apply the same idea with them.

Themes and PageRank

This has been about themes. But themes are not the only factor in the rankings. PageRank is the basis of them. To take PageRank into account with the theme structure described, read Google's PageRank Explained, and apply the concepts to the all the linkages within the site, including those within each product group.

If you're looking for ways to protect your computer from viruses, many of which depend on Microsoft's Internet Explorer to create an infection, consider switching to a browser other than IE. As the dominant browser software in the market, Explorer is the easiest target for hackers.

Despite IE's market dominance, there are alternatives. One option I've found effective is Mozilla's Firefox (www.mozilla.com), version 1.5. Firefox is a free Web browser with features I prefer to those of Explorer.

Another option, Opera, now in version 8.5, offers many of the same features as Firefox, but until last fall it wasn't free. Now the download is free from www.opera.com, but premium support is still priced at $29 annually. That's why I opt for Firefox.

Firefox's main attraction is that its basic program code is open to all developers to view, test, tinker with, and enhance. IE and many other browsers are privately developed and use proprietary code. Among the benefits of open source code: more experts out there in cyberland to quickly find and correct bugs, which creates a more stable and secure program with fewer crashes and less risk of viruses.

Although Firefox functions very similarly to other browsers, there are two key differences. First, the program automatically blocks unrequested and annoying pop-up windows that clutter your screen. The latest version of IE includes this feature, although I haven't found it to work well.

Second, Firefox lets you open new Web pages in a tabbed interface. Rather than opening multiple copies of the browser itself to display several sites on your monitor at once as is required with IE, you can use tabbed browsing to open several Web pages within a single browser window in Firefox. Plus, you can define a set of tabs as your home page. Then when you click the Home button in the toolbar, all of the tabs you specified will open together. (To appreciate the difference in tabs versus pages, think about how easy it is to open multiple worksheets in Excel using tabs as opposed to multiple pages in Word.) The tabs feature lets you use far less memory and system resources while searching the Web.

One security feature I find particularly effective is a tool that lets you choose which sites you want to remember your data for filling out forms and which you don't. This way, you can easily autofill forms for noncritical sites, such as newsgroups, but avoid sharing confidential information you might use at a bank site. If you've saved form data on first entry at a site, a drop-down menu will appear next time you start a form at that site and let you select which data fields you want to auto-complete in the new form.

Another plus for Firefox is the seemingly endless number of custom add-on utilities, or extensions, that you can download and install for free, all available from https://do-not-add.mozilla.org/extensions. Two of my favorites are

* Adblock. This must-have tool lets you take back your browser window space from overly abusive advertisements, such as those with bandwidth-hogging Flash or other animation. When you view a page online that has too many graphic ads, you can use Adblock to strip them from the window.

* IE View. If you encounter a Web page that will display properly only in IE (not uncommon with MLS, banking, and other data-intensive sites), you can manually instruct Firefox to open links to such sites automatically in IE. Then the next time you try to open the page, it will open in IE. It's a great timesaver when you don't want to open IE and copy the URL to access the site.

Once you've tried Firefox, I think you'll join its many fans and make the switch. But even if you decide to stick with IE, check out your own site in Firefox and other browsers to ensure that it retains functionality. And ask your developer or host to update or build your site to support all major browsers currently in use. If Firefox users visit your site and can't view it properly, they'll move on to a competitor.

A Word-Wise Firefox Extension

The Hyperwords Company has just launched a free add-on to the Firefox browser that brings hyperlinks (define) to any word on the Web.

"This isn't just limited to word definitions," Hyperwords CEO Frode Hegland told internetnews.com. "We let you interact with words in any number of ways. The user decides."

With Hyperwords loaded, you simply highlight any word by double-clicking and nine different options appear: Search, Reference, Map, Shop, Copy, Email, Tag, Blog, and Translate. Hyperwords is a free download at the company's Web site.

You can also do useful things with whole sections of text. For example, highlight several paragraphs click on "Email" and "Immediately" and the highlighted text is copied to a new e-mail message ready to be sent.

That's pretty handy, but here's something way slicker. Highlight a word and you have the option to have the word or the entire page translated to another language in a new window that opens in a few seconds.

English, German, French, Italian, Portugese, Japanese, Spanish, and Chinese translations are available.

"We don't own any of the data, but we provide a means for you to interact with the data," said Hegland.

The language translation capability comes from freetranslation.com; search options include Google, Yahoo, Alexa and Clusty; the Reference links takes you to Wikipedia, Dictionary.com, IMBd (Internet Movie Database), and so on.

Hegland said Hyperwords has a patent pending on its system, which has been developed over the course of two years at the University College London. A few angel investors are helping the startup, but Hegland admits he hasn't sorted out how to make money off of it.

"We're testing various business models but we don't know yet," he said. "One direction might be to offer special or professional versions for corporate customers."

Hegland credits head coder Mikhail Seliverstov for much of the work in implementing the hypertext (define) ideas in the Hyperwords system.

Hegland said Hyperwords started with the Firefox browser because it seems to be more readily extensible than Internet Explorer.

"Also, Firefox users seem more ready to try new things."

He said a version of Hyperwords for Internet Explorer is planned for this year.

6. Technologies: This firm must be aware of latest trends and technologies in the field. If required, ask them some questions related to your technology requirements. Make sure they have proper access to the tools or softwares required. Study their finished projects if possible.

Google Toolbar 4 (beta)

Google released a beta version of Google Toolbar 4, an update to the search toolbar used by millions. With this version users can add custom buttons that will either search your favorite site without your having to go there or take you directly to it. A drop-down menu on the button itself can even reveal the latest headlines from that site.

With the public launch of this update, users will be able to install ready-made buttons from the Google Button Gallery. Web site owners will also be able to create custom buttons for their own sites that can be shared with visitors (be sure to grab your PC Magazine button while visiting the gallery!).

The new Send To button lets you share pages via blog (you need a Blogger.com account), e-mail (you need a Gmail account), or text message (SMS). There's also a Gmail button that can replace the Gmail notifier that sits in your taskbar.

One feature carried over from previous toolbar versions that we found particularly intriguing was AutoLink, which lets you convert the U.S. street addresses you encounter into links to online maps, saving you the trouble of cutting and pasting the address. Other features that we liked are Highlight, which colors search terms on a Web page so you can find them easily; Word Find, which locates terms on a Web page; and WordTranslator, which translates English words into other languages.

The new toolbar adds a button that lets you sign into your Google account from anywhere, along with a green light icon that tells you you're signed in—one of several ways the toolbar encourages users to sign up for an account. As another example, it lets you easily bookmark a page and access your bookmarks from any computer, but only through your Google account. And the handy Search History feature is more useful if you're signed in: Instead of a drop-down on the search bar, it appears as you start to type, but only the part of the list relevant to your current search is shown. You also see your complete search history only if you've signed in; the same is true of the new Suggested Searches feature, which combines your history and popular Google searches. Whether being required to sign in is a good thing or not depends on your preferences; the personalization is nice, as is being able to access your history and bookmarks on different machines, but the compromise is that your data could be collected.

Especially in light of Google's recent subpoena from the Justice Department, it's nice to know when our data is being collected, so we can opt out, and we found it refreshing that during installation, the option to "send us usage statistics" is turned off by default (and can always be turned on or off later from inside the toolbar). We were also pleased to see that turning on the WordTranslator elicits a warning that the feature has privacy implications.

If you liked the old Google Toolbar, you'll definitely want to give the new one a try, both for its increased search abilities and for its easy access to other Google services. You can download the beta version here for IE 6.0 and above (no Firefox support yet).

AUTOEXEC.NT Error after Installation of Windows XP SP2

Problem
After installation of Service Pack 2, Windows XP may display an error message relating to "AUTOEXEC.NT" when trying to run certain 16-bit applications.

Discussion
The InstallShield software used for the installation of JInitiator makes use of 16-bit Windows technology which requires a valid AUTOEXEC.NT file to be present in the system. This file, which is part of the Windows 16-bit subsystem as it ships with Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003, normally resides in the "System32" subdirectory of the Windows installation directory.
Installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2 on an otherwise "healthy" Windows XP system may delete the AUTOEXEC.NT file. As a result, when trying to run certain applications which make use of 16-bit technology an error message like the following may be displayed:

"16 bit Windows Subsystem - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."
The error message can be misleading, because it is displayed even if the AUTOEXEC.NT file is actually missing.

To verify whether you have the file, type "%windir%/system32/" in the address bar of an Explorer window. If there is no AUTOEXEC.NT file proceed as follows:
1. Browse to "%windir%/repair/" (usually "C:\WINDOWS\repair")
2. Right-Click and Copy the AUTOEXEC.NT file
3. Browse to "%windir%/system32/" (usually "C:\WINDOWS\System32")
4. Right-Click inside the window and Paste the file
The error condition described here may also be the result of corruption of the AUTOEXEC.NT file, in which case the above procedure may be helpful to restore a valid file.

Kama Sutra Threat Looms Large

As D-Day for the 'Kama Sutra' worm nears, security firm Sophos is warning users not to panic over the threat posed by it.

The W32/Nyxem-D worm, which can pose as pictures of the Kama Sutra, has a destructive payload, which triggers half an hour after a computer is booted on the third day of any month, destroying DOC, XLS, MDB, MDE, PPT, PPS, ZIP, RAR, PDF, PSD and DMP files by replacing their contents with the phrase:

Nyxem-D worm is also known as Blackworm, Email-Worm.Win32.VB.bi, Win32/Mywife.e or W32.Blackmal.E@mm. "When you panic, you make mistakes," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos. "Sit down, have a cup of tea, and work out if you have done everything you should have done to ensure your computer isn't at risk from the Nyxem worm, and indeed any of the other 120,000 pieces of malware in existence."

The W32/Nyxem-D Windows worm does not infect Macintosh computers and experts believe that home users may be at more risk than businesses because typically they take security issues less seriously.

"Most businesses have been successfully protecting against this worm for a couple of weeks," said Cluley. "Home users who have not been updating their software may be at risk if they are in the habit of opening unsolicited attachments in emails with dodgy sounding subject lines. Even if they are infected, and do nothing, and the worm demolishes their data on Friday, they should be able to recover if they have a recent backup. Anyone who suffers from this worm's payload simply hasn't been practicing safe computing."

Sophos warns that focusing too much on Nyxem's threat on Friday 3 February may leave people unaware of other malware risks.

"The damage caused by W32/Nyxem-D has stirred up the public interest because it sounds really terrible - but in many ways, it is the less visible malicious payloads delivered by other malware which can be far worse," said Cluley. "You may be able to recover the files deleted by Nyxem by going to backup or retyping the content. But you can never get back files which a hacker stole from your PC using a backdoor Trojan. You can never untype keystrokes which were captured by a keylogger. You can never unsend the thousands of emails spammed out if your computer is a zombie."

"Bottom line - if you're worried about Nyxem-D now is the time to look for it, but maybe if you're worried about that you also have reason to be worried about all the other malware out there," said Cluley. "In January we saw 2,312 brand new pieces of malware, that's over 500 every single week."

Sophos suggests that computer users who are concerned that they may be at risk ensure that their anti-virus software is properly installed and up-to-date, and that unsolicited email attachments are not opened. Additionally, PC users should ensure that they have patched their computer against the latest Windows security vulnerabilities, and that a client firewall is installed. Backups of valuable data should be routine both inside businesses and at home.

Sex sells and the new internet worm (Nyxem-E) nick-named the "Kama Sutra worm" because it spreads under the guise of pornographic content, has leap-frogged lesser viruses reaching top-spot on world virus charts.

Nyxem-E aka Kama Sutra is a mass-mailing worm which attempts to disable security-related and file-sharing software and destroys files of certain types. When run on a Windows PC, the worm copies itself to shared network locations, and sends itself to e-mail addresses found on the target computer. Nyxem-E, according to F-Secure, is programmed to disable anti-virus and firewall software, and delete certain files including Office documents, on the third day of every month.

The Kama Sutra worm arrives as an e-mail attachment, with different subject lines including "School girl fantasies gone bad," "The Best Videoclip Ever," "A Great Video," "give me a kiss," "Fwd: Photo," "Fw: Sexy," "You Must View This Videoclip!" "Miss Lebanon 2006," etc. The text differs; it may include references to the Kama Sutra - the ancient Sanskrit book on sex and related matters.

F-Secure has reported a steady stream of Nyxem worms from all over the world, and has said that at last call the worm showed 510,000 infected systems.

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant, Sophos, said that the Kama Sutra worm uses a dated technique to entice users by promising pornography, and that the worm lacks the sophistication of recent Trojan horse-style viruses.

Security experts have advised users to keep their anti-virus software up-to-date, and be wary whilst opening e-mail attachments.
